DEVELOPMENT OF MONOGRAPHS FOR FIVE PRODUCTS UTILIZING SPRAY DRYER TECHNOLOGY

Project Overview

The Development of Monographs for Five Products Utilizing Spray Dryer Technology project is a strategic RMRDC initiative aimed at addressing Nigeria’s high rate of post-harvest losses, estimated at over ₦3.5 trillion annually (according to NIPHaST data). The project recognizes spray drying technology as a vital industrial process for preserving perishable agricultural products, extending their shelf life, and creating value-added derivatives suitable for industrial and consumer applications.

Spray drying — a process that transforms liquid or semi-liquid raw materials into stable powdered forms through controlled drying — holds immense potential for food preservation, nutraceutical production, pharmaceutical formulation, and industrial raw material development. Through this project, RMRDC seeks to document and standardize five key product formulations that can be effectively developed using locally sourced agro-raw materials and spray drying techniques.

The project’s objectives include:

  • Conducting laboratory trials for five selected agro-based products.

  • Optimizing process parameters for product stability, nutritional retention, and cost efficiency.

  • Developing comprehensive monographs detailing technical specifications, process workflows, and industrial application guidelines.

  • Providing baseline data to support technology transfer, pilot-scale production, and industrial adoption.

This initiative will ultimately contribute to reducing post-harvest losses, enhancing food security, and supporting local manufacturing of food and industrial inputs. It also aligns with RMRDC’s core mandate of promoting local raw material utilization and advancing indigenous technology development in Nigeria’s agro-processing sector.
