DOMESTICATION OF “TEKCAST” SPIN CASTING TECHNOLOGY FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

Project Overview

The Domestication of Tekcast Spin Casting Technology Project is a forward-looking initiative designed to enhance Nigeria’s local manufacturing capacity in the automotive and metal component industries. The project seeks to transfer, adapt, and localize the Tekcast spin casting technology — a globally recognized process for producing high-precision, medium-complexity metal parts — to suit Nigeria’s industrial and raw material context.

The project focuses initially on the production of tricycle and motorcycle components, particularly clutch and brake levers, which are essential but largely imported items in Nigeria’s growing transportation sector. By developing in-country capability for such production, the initiative directly addresses the national goal of import substitution, promotes technology domestication, and builds local expertise in precision metal casting and part fabrication.

The domestication process involves setting up pilot-scale spin casting equipment, training local engineers and technicians, and developing customized molds and tooling designs based on indigenous material inputs. This approach ensures the sustainability of the technology while promoting research–industry collaboration, industrial innovation, and skill development within Nigeria’s automotive component ecosystem.

When fully implemented, the project will support the emergence of local component manufacturers, reduce reliance on imported automotive parts, create jobs, and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the regional automotive value chain. It also aligns strongly with RMRDC’s mandate to foster industrial growth through the utilization of local raw materials and technological adaptation.
