Nigeria was noted globally for hides and skin production for which it has significant level of comparative advantage. However, the declining livestock production associated with the weak agricultural system, has affected the country’s competitiveness in the exports of processed skin.Further development of the sector in terms of availability of skin, improved quality and enhanced processing facilities will result in expanded export opportunities for products. The sub-sector needs upgrading in terms of technology, quality and development of the entire leather value chain
Common commercial hides include leather from cattle and other livestock animals, buckskin, alligator skin and snake skin. All are used for shoes, clothes, leather bags, belts and other fashion accessories. Leather is also used in cars, upholstery, interior decorating, horse tack and harnesses.
