Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol and abbreviated as EtOH, is a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid that is soluble in water. Its chemical formula is C2H6O, or can be written as C2H5OH or CH3CH2OH.
Used extensively as a solvent in the manufacture of varnishes and perfumes; as a preservative for biological specimens; in the preparation of essences and flavorings; in many medicines and drugs; as a disinfectant and in tinctures (e.g., tincture of iodine); and as a fuel and gasoline additive.
