In an effort towards revamping the ailing textile sector, the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), has organized the second in series of the ongoing capacity building on Cotton Textile Garment (CTG) production. The workshop is designed to train prospective investors in the area of production of textiles and garments and also promote entrepreneurship spirit among the youth. The workshop tagged ‘Entrepreneurship Training on Garment Production for Local and International Markets’ held at the Arewa House, Kaduna, on 4th and 5th 0f October, 2017 and was organized in collaboration with El Jahab Mubarak, a private garment manufacturing factory in Kaduna. The first training was held in Lagos, in collaboration with Crown Natures LTD, on the 31st of October, through to the 1st of November, 2016.

RMRDC is a strategic partner in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) of the Federal Government for 2017-2020, which places specific emphasis on investment in human capital, restoration of economic growth and building a globally competitive economy, with an ambitious target of 7% real GDP growth by 2020; and being one of the organizations with the mandate and a key player in economic and national industrial development, is contributing towards national growth by realizing that one of the ways the macroeconomic environment can be stabilized is through sustained investment in the CTG sector.

Previously, in Nigeria, the production of textiles had flourished at both cottage and industrial levels. Studies show that the industry had been a major employer of labour (about 60% of the labour force) in the manufacturing sector and contributed immensely to the socio-economic and cultural development of the country. It is unfortunate; however, that the current economic low-ebb in Nigeria has developed adversarial forces limiting the proper functioning of the textile industry as a resourceful economic contributor, but RMRDC is determined to fashion out ways to improve the fortunes of the sector.
